How it came to be

The town on a peninsula between the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers became the capital of Lan Xang, the kingdom founded by Fa Ngum in 1353. In 1359 the Khmer king at Angkor gave Fa Ngum the Phra Bang Buddha image, which gave the city its name.

After France established its protectorate in 1893, Luang Prabang remained the royal seat, and brick colonial buildings rose among wooden Lao houses and stone temples. More than 30 Buddhist temples survive, and monks still collect alms through the streets every morning.
