How it came to be
Along the Atlantic coast of Mauritania between Nouakchott and Nouadhibou lie sand dunes, coastal swamps, small islands and shallow waters. Upwelling off Cap Blanc brings nutrients that feed fish, birds and marine mammals.
The area became a national park in 1976 and was inscribed in 1989. More than two million waders from northern Europe, Siberia and Greenland winter on its mudflats, and 25,000 to 40,000 pairs of 15 species nest there, the largest waterbird colonies in West Africa.
About 500 Imraguen people live in seven villages inside the park and fish by traditional methods, using dolphins to draw in shoals of fish. Motor boats are not allowed in the park.
