How it came to be

In 1337 the monk Sergius of Radonezh built a wooden church dedicated to the Holy Trinity on Makovets Hill, about 70 kilometres north-east of Moscow. Sergius was spiritual adviser to Grand Prince Dmitri Donskoi and blessed him before the Battle of Kulikovo in 1380, and his followers founded more than 400 monasteries across Russia.

In 1422 the first stone church, the Trinity Cathedral, was built, and it holds the relics of St Sergius; Andrei Rublev's icon The Trinity was painted for it. Ivan the Terrible commissioned the Cathedral of the Assumption in 1559, where Boris Godunov and his family are buried.

During the Time of Troubles the monastery withstood a 16-month siege by Polish-Lithuanian forces. After a fire in 1746 destroyed most of the wooden buildings, an 88-metre bell tower was built. The ensemble of more than 50 buildings was inscribed in 1993.
