How it came to be

In the Komi Republic of north-western Russia, west of the Ural Mountains, lies the largest area of virgin boreal forest left in Europe. It covers 3.28 million hectares of tundra, mountain tundra and forests of Siberian spruce and larch.

Reindeer, sable and European mink live here, and the forests have been studied for more than fifty years. Peat bogs, rivers and lakes store water and carbon.

The Pechora-Ilych Nature Reserve was created in 1930 and Yugyd Va National Park in 1994. In 1995 the two were inscribed together, Russia's first natural World Heritage site. Pressure to mine gold there continues.
