How it came to be

In 1401 six small medieval hospitals in Barcelona merged to form the Hospital de la Santa Creu. In the early twentieth century a new hospital was planned with money from the banker Pau Gil, and "Sant Pau" was added to its name. It was designed by the Catalan Modernista architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner, and the complex was completed in 1930.

Domènech also built the Palau de la Música Catalana from 1905 to 1908 for the Orfeó Català, the choral society founded in 1891 by Lluís Millet and Amadeu Vives. The hall, lit entirely by natural light during the day, opened on 9 February 1908. Joaquín Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez had its premiere there in 1940.

The Palau was restored and extended from 1982 to 1989 by Oscar Tusquets and Carles Díaz, and a 538-seat hall opened below the square in 2004. The hospital moved to a new building next door in June 2009, and after restoration the old complex reopened in 2014 as a museum and cultural centre. The two buildings were inscribed in 1997.
