How it came to be
Plague struck Moravia from 1713 to 1715, and Olomouc's Holy Trinity Column was raised partly in thanks for its end. Wenzel Render, a stonemason and imperial architect, proposed and designed it, helped pay for it and began the work in 1716.
The work took 38 years, and several builders, Render first among them, died before it was finished. Johann Ignaz Rokický completed it. The sculptor Andreas Zahner made 18 statues and 9 reliefs in seven years, and the goldsmith Simon Forstner made the gilded copper groups of the Holy Trinity and the Assumption. A chapel is built into the body of the column.
It was completed in 1754 and consecrated in the presence of Empress Maria Theresa and Emperor Francis I. About four years later Prussian cannon hit the column several times during a siege. It was fully restored in 1999-2001 and inscribed in 2000.
