How it came to be

From 1853 to 1888 the Great Indian Peninsula Railway ended at Bori Bunder in Bombay. Work on a new terminus began in May 1878. Frederick William Stevens designed it from an initial scheme by Axel Haig, and it took about ten years to build. It was named Victoria Terminus to mark Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee.

Its High Victorian Gothic, based on late medieval Italian models, is mixed with a stone dome, turrets and pointed arches that recall Indian palace architecture. Much of the decoration was made by students of the Sir Jamsetjee Jeejebhoy School of Art under John Lockwood Kipling. The facade carries reliefs of the ten directors of the old railway company.

The station was renamed Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in March 1996, and Maharaj was added in 2017. It was inscribed in 2004 and serves more than three million commuters a day. On 26 November 2008 two gunmen attacked the passenger hall, killing 58 people.
