How it came to be
The University City of Caracas is the main campus of the Central University of Venezuela. In 1942 the government of President Isaías Medina Angarita bought the Hacienda Ibarra, which had once belonged to Simón Bolívar's family. The architect Carlos Raúl Villanueva drew up a first plan in 1944 and revised the design in 1949.
Villanueva directed the design and building for more than twenty years, putting up 40 buildings on about 2 km². He set out to join architecture, painting and sculpture, and 26 artists from Venezuela and abroad contributed works. The Aula Magna and the Covered Plaza were inaugurated on 2 March 1954.
The campus also includes the Olympic Stadium and a botanical garden. It was inscribed in 2000 as an outstanding example of Modern Movement architecture.
