Champollion, who had deciphered the hieroglyphs, led the expedition with his pupil Ippolito Rosellini, backed by Charles X of France and Grand Duke Leopold II of Tuscany. The party reached Alexandria on the corvette Églé on 18 August 1828, sailed up the Nile as far as the second cataract at Wadi Halfa before turning back, and spent much of 1829 at Thebes. He returned to France in December 1829. The letters he wrote on the way were published as Lettres écrites d'Égypte et de Nubie.
